Numeracy & Photography

A Pedagogical Project with Grade 3 & 4 Students

“Our math and photography project began a few weeks ago when we, the grade 3 & 4 students of our school learned the basics of photography, such as, the rule of thirds, framing (addition and subtraction) and leading lines.

We then practiced these concepts on a walk around the neighbourhood using frames made by Madame Mélanie.

A photographer named Lisa then helped us with the project and with her, we roamed the alleyways near our school in pairs and took photographs with our iPads thinking of the concepts we learned and the presentation Lisa gave us.

When we went back to school, we chose one photograph each, gave it a name and invented a mathematical problem related to our photo. We then worked to solve our problems in class.

Then, again with Lisa's help, each group decided how to display our photos and math problems for our vernissage in the gymnasium.” - grade 4 students

Please note that this presentation is in French as it took place in a francophone school in the “Centre de services scolaire Marguerite-Bourgeoys”.
